Biden declares emergency after hackers shutdown US pipeline
The Colonial Pipeline, a 5,500 fuel pipeline system that provides half the fuel used on the East coast of the United States, has been shutdown for two days following a major ransomware attack.
President Biden has declared a regional emergency with a declaration that allows for fuel to be transported by road to the affected states.
Federal agencies and contractors have been hit with a wave of cyberattacks in recent months, and it is expected that the Biden administration will sign an executive order instructing them to plug vulnerable security gaps.
As many as 2,400 organizations have been hit by ransomware demands in the last year, and the amount paid by victims more than tripled in that time compared to 2019.
